NBA Summer League (Las Vegas): Day 2

It’s difficult to draw a correlation between NBA Summer League stats and future fantasy potential; just because it’s difficult doesn’t mean that it isn’t a worthwhile endeavor. While players like Anthony Randolph (2009 – 26.8 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 2.2 spg, 3.0 bpg) barely provide fantasy value once the “real” games start, a second round pick like Marcus Thornton (2009 – 20.7 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 2.3 spg) can demonstrate his future potential to fantasy owners that are willing to do their research. Thornton was a late round / undrafted free agent in many fantasy leagues during the 2009-10 basketball season, but was owned in 90+ percent of leagues by the time the fantasy playoffs rolled around. Here’s the hook… you don’t have to do the research, because I’m going to do it for you. Be sure to check back daily.

Summer League Orlando 2010 (Year 1): Jrue Holiday, James Harden, Paul George, and Gerald Henderson

Summer League Las Vegas 2010: John Wall, DeMar DeRozen, JaVale McGee, Marcus Thornton, Ty Lawson, and Jordan Crawford.

While it’s unlikely that Tony Wroten (PG / MEM) will climb higher than second on the depth chart this season, it looks like he could contribute off the bench with the likely departure of OJ Mayo: 19 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals, and 4 turnovers.

If the Kings didn’t have a loaded front court, Thomas Robinson (PF / SAC) would be a mid / late round draft pick in October. With Jason Thompson, Chuck Hayes, Tyreke Evans, and James Johnson all needing minutes it’s unlikely that Robinson will be anything other than a potential free agent pickup during the season: 14 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, and 3 turnovers.

Harrison Barnes (SF / GSW) should start for the Warriors this season (especially with the departure of Dorell Wright). Barnes has had two solid games in as many days and has the potential to be a mid round pick in redraft leagues: 13 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 4 steals, and 2 turnovers.
